In the inbox it show how many new emails there are, mine is not being updated I have to keep clicking on check?

when I look at the inbox it is never updated automatically, it shows the same amount of emails all the time. I have to keep clicking on check mail or nbox and then it will update. Why is this happening and howe can I fix this problem, its been this way for 10 days.
