Safe mode startup problems in thinkpad edge?

Hey there, I'm having problems starting my safe mode in windows 7 for my lenovo thinkpad edge... I try hitting the f8 key and it doesn't work. In the start up it says if I click enter it will interrupt the startup so I do and then it takes me to a page that gives me three options, to escape it, f1 for the BIOS setup utility and f12 with is to choose a temp start up device. I can't find safe mode anywhere!
